Adopted Son – by Randi Schalet

Red Ranger rolls down the lawn
Snaps his arm
Pain med not working
Mind already broken

Shakes his butt in a dancer’s cage
Chain belt cinches his waist
His need goes deep
Always wanting

A stiff hug–
Peeking behind my back
To see who else
Might be coming to love him

Randi Schalet is a psychologist living in Berkeley, CA. She began writing poetry after her adopted son died of an overdose in 2021. Her poems have been recently published in The Write Launch, Presence Journal, and Ponder Magazine.
